My first day has been filled with jet lag and excitement. It's currently midnight here and I'm up waiting to watch The Heat play at 2:30am...with a 7:30am start for my classes :-/. Anyhow, here are a few pictures of my first day :-)
This is me with some of the girls from the program. The backdrop is of Table Top Mountain which sits right in the center of the city--it's on of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen!
A better view of the mountains, as well as the formerly "whites only" township.
A beautiful church!
The District Six Museum which tells the story of the "coloured" people during the apartheid.
Ok, so this is kind of gross-- in the "black" township I passed by a family preparing sheep heads...and I'll leave it at that.
A beautiful little girl I met in the "black" township. She had some adorable braids, and was so photogenic-- future model!
This was a room in the hostel "black" township which housed THREE FAMILIES...all in this one room which also serves as their kitchen.
This was a more affluent area of the "black" township where many professional "black" families purchase homes in the hopes of increasing the level of pride and affluence among a group of people for whom the effects of apartheid are still felt. These girls did a dance for us.
These are some make-shift homes of people who have no where else. There were rows of outhouses across the street where they have to use bathrooms. Even some of the permanent homes don't have much indoor plumbing besides a tap for water. For money, some make sculptures from pop (soda) cans of animals, while others make jewelry.
We ended the day with a performance by a youth group in the community...they were so good!!
